Protest, Justice, and Transnational Organizing
Hilton Union Square, San Francisco, CA
November 14-17, 2019

The NWSA Asexuality Studies Interest Group welcomes presentation proposals for the 2018 NWSA annual conference. We are interested in presentations that address a range of topics related to the study of asexuality.  Keeping in mind this year’s conference theme, “Protest, Justice, and Transnational Organizing,” we are especially interested in presentations that consider the role that asexuality can play in contemporary protest movements. What role has asexuality played in shaping current visions of social justice and in developing new strategies for organizing?  How might asexuality studies scholars and activists continue the work of building coalition with anti-racist, anti-imperialist, LGBTQ, and feminist social justice movements both within and across national borders?

Conference sub-themes for 2019 are:
·       Politics of labor and class
·       Politics of the state
·       Human and nonhuman worlds
·       Transformative justice
·       Trans*/trans-feminist futures
·       Spatial politics / transgressing borders
·       Art, performance, literary and visual culture
·       Politics of knowledge
·       Body politics

Other potential topics for presentations on asexualities might include:

  • asexual visibility and the exclusion of asexuality from LGBTQIA* protest movements

  • compulsory sexuality’s relationship to colonialism

  • environmentalism and climate change

  • Asexual perspectives on #metoo and consent

  • asexuality and two-spirit identity

  • settler colonialism and indigenous studies

  • San Francisco-based asexual activism

  • digital activism, including asexual blogs and bloggers

  • global organizing and human rights

  • asexuality, biopolitics and posthumanism

  • reproductive futurity and its discontents

  • queerness, neurodiversity, disability, crip justice, and asexuality

  • representations of asexual identities and intersectionalities in literature, film, and media

These asexuality-related themes are orientated towards the NWSA 2018 CFP which can be found here: https://www.nwsa.org/files/2019CFP_Final(1).pdf

If you have any questions, please email <nwsa.asexuality@gmail.com>.

Please note: Once we have received and reviewed the submissions, we will work on assigning presentations to specific panels. We will try to accommodate as many qualified presentations as possible, but spaces are limited to 3-4 presenters per panel. Each panel is 75 minutes long and each presentation can take 15-20 minutes depending on the number of presenters. NWSA will make the final decision about which panels are accepted. Presenters accepted into the conference program must become members of NWSA in addition to registering for the conference.
